The company in charge of six weeks of roadworks has said it will ensure it causes as little disruption as possible.
Totteridge Lane in Whetstone will close next week as National Grid replaces the metal gas main with plastic pipes.
Local businesses and residents have expressed their worry at the “chaos” and loss of trade that could result from the closure of the major commuter route.
However National Grid spokesman Antony Quarrell said the work was necessary so people could continue to enjoy safe and reliable gas supplies.
He added: “Projects like this are all part of our job of keeping people connected to their energy supplies.
“We always try to deliver our vital work as sensitively as possible. The project was carefully planned and we worked closely with the local council.
“By carrying out the work during the school summer holidays when the roads are generally quieter. We also help to ensure that traffic disruption is reduced.”
He added National Grid had sent out letters to people on the street informing them of the work, as well as putting in place road signs surrounding the junction between Totteridge Lane and Whetstone High Street.
Mr Quarrell added: "Small businesses genuinely impacted by our planned gas main replacement work may be elighble for compensation, providing certain criteria are met."
