A man who was arrested in a Spiderman costume on suspicion of making fake high street charity collections has been deported from the UK.
The 25-year-old bucket shaker was wearing the superhero outfit when he was detained by police outside Sainsbury’s supermarket, in North Finchley High Road on May 16.
He claimed to be raising money for London-based charity Healing UK but a member of the public became suspicious and contacted police.
Officers questioned the man before discovering the name he gave them did not match his charity identification badge and he was arrested on suspicion of fraud by false representation.
The suspected fraudster, who was living at an address in Hackney, was bailed to return to a north London police station this week.
But the Metropolitan Police revealed that, since his arrest, he has since been deported to his home country of Nigeria and there will be no action taken against him.
Healing UK, which has its headquarters based near Old Street tube station, provides complimentary treatments and low cost therapies for people with life-limiting illnesses.
A representative of the charity previously said its members always wore identification badges and that the organisation was “appalled” at the alleged incident.
