Labour has been told it needs to “come clean” over its membership in Finchley and Golders Green after it became embroiled in a candidate selection scandal.
One of the constituency party’s hopefuls for the 2015 general election was named in a leaked list of candidates being backed by trade union Unite – the Labour Party’s biggest donor.
Unite became embroiled in controversy earlier this month over accusations it attempted to influence the selection of Labour candidates in other constituencies.
The union is backing 41 people campaigning for selection as Labour candidates for the 2015 general election.
The names were listed in the union’s Political Directors Report from May, which was leaked this week.
Among them was Alon Or-Bach, aiming for selection in Finchley and Golders Green, and Annajoy David, in Enfield North.
Labour’s selection process in Falkirk and Ilford North has been referred to police over allegations Unite packed the local membership with union members in an attempt to influence the vote.
Conservative Finchley and Golders Green MP Mike Freer said: “It is an internal Labour process so we’re not sure what they have done in Finchley and Golders Green but we have seen the way they appear to be going about this in other constituencies and it is a concern.
“Labour needs to come clean about its membership and be transparent about what is going on.”
Mr Or-Bach, a member of the Campaign for Better Barnet, is up against left-wing lawyer Sarah Sackman for Labour’s selection in Finchley and Golders Green.
Phil Dilks, of the London Labour Party said: “We have no evidence of wrongdoing in any of these constituencies.
“We want to be open and transparent and the Labour Party has taken action where there have been allegations of malpractice.
“We’re trying to make sure it doesn’t happen again and we’re putting measures in place to ensure this.”
