Barnet and Southgate College will reveal plans to relocate its Grahame Park campus today.
The college wants to move from its current site in Grahame Park Way to a new site known as Plot A8 in Lanacre Avenue, Colindale.
Barnet Borough Council has already granted planning consent for a six storey residential block, together with a public library, shops and a Centre for Independent Living (CIL).
But the college aims to replace this current proposal with plans for its new campus, which will incorporate the library and CIL.
Speaking to the Times Series Principal of the college David Byrne said: “This has been a long term strategy. Our Grahame Park campus has suffered for many years with not the best of spaces and poor conditions in terms of teaching so we needed to upgrade or move.
“We also want to be nearer to Colindale tube station to be more accessible to our learners.
“We want it to be of a very high quality, bringing education closer to the residents and something the area can be proud of.”
The new building would be five storeys high, making enough room for the college’s 2,800 students.
Mr Byrne is determined the new college will still focus on hairdressing and construction courses, and hopes to have a trainee salon on the ground floor to encourage more members of the public to use it.
However, the campus’ centre for people with learning disabilities will be moved to the college’s Southgate campus if the plans go ahead.
The plans will be on show from 2-8pm today at the Grahame Park campus in Grahame Park Way.
Mr Byrne said: “We want everyone to contribute and have their say on the plans – the more the merrier.
“We want all manner of opinions, good or bad, so we can shape the next stages of the development and design.”
