Police investigating the mysterious death of a popular college student have released images of a couple they believe were the last people to see him alive.

Benjamin Ingledew, 22, was struck by a train half-a-mile before it was due to stop at Potters Bar railway station shortly before 12.45am on Sunday, May 5.

Two months on, several questions over how and why he was on the railway tracks remain unanswered.

British Transport Police are currently treating the death as non-suspicious but are appealing for the two people in these CCTV images, captured walking through the station car park at 12.10am, to come forward.

Officers believe they may have crucial information about Ben’s last movements that could help his “devastated” family make sense of the incident.

In a statement issued through the police, the family of the popular veterinary student said: “For our family, the shock of losing Ben so suddenly and unexpectedly has been huge.

“Ben was popular, friendly and loyal to all who knew him. He was affectionate and sensitive, kind and caring and would do anything for anybody.

“He took an interest in everything and everyone around him. Ben was looking forward to seeing more of the world, the people, the places and the animals. He was sensible and fun, known for his sense of humour and practical jokes.

“Ben thoroughly enjoyed being at university and training to be a vet. He had his entire life before him and he was planning his future with anticipation and excitement. Since a young age Ben wanted to be a vet, and he was at the stage where he was putting into practice all that he had learned so far.

“The devastation we feel at the death of our son and brother Ben has been compounded further because the recollections of the events leading up to the tragedy do not make sense.

“The accounts we have been told of what happened before Ben’s death have left us with unanswered questions, and in order for us to begin to live with the loss of Ben we need to understand the truth.”

Emergency services were called to the Darkes Lane station by the driver of the train but Ben, who was living in Potters Bar but comes from Shepperton in Surrey, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are currently preparing a file for the coroner before an inquest takes place later this year but have appealed for more information about his movements on the night he died.

Detective Constable Terry Hancocks of the British Transport Police said: “I’d particularly like to hear from a man and a woman, seen on CCTV walking through the Potters Bar station car park around 12.10am.

“The angle of the footage, and the fact that it was night-time, doesn’t allow for a clear shot of their faces, but I’m certain they’ll recognise themselves.

“I must emphasise that they aren't in any trouble, but we do need to speak to them because they could help our enquiries.

“We’ve carried out a number of enquiries to try and build a clear picture of what took place, including speaking with Ben’s student friends at the nearby Royal Veterinary College, and want to hear from anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it might seem.”
