A burst water main is causing heavy rush hour traffic in the Arkley and Mill Hill areas.
Hendon Wood Lane in Arkley has been closed for repairs to the fault, which is causing severe delays in surrounding areas.
The closure is in place between Totteridge Common and Barnet Lane and diversions are causing tail backs to the A1.
The dual carriageway is at a standstill in places southbound, and there is heavy congestion between Stirling Corner and Fiveways Corner.
Motorists are also reporting delays in Mill Hill as a result of the closure, some areas of which have been left in gridlock.
Mill Hill Circus has been brought to a standstill by the incident, with witnesses reporting several frustrated drivers sat in long queues honking their horns.
One motorist tweeted: “What’s with Apex Corner in Mill Hill? I’ve gone the back route down Hendon Wood Lane and its mental! Avoid all routes.”
The Times Series is waiting on a statement from Affinity Water but it is understood engineers could take some time to repair the fault.
