A 'dementia' round in a pub quiz is one of the activities taking place across Barnet during Dementia Awareness Week.

The Alzheimer’s Society in Barnet is working with hospitals, business and members of the public across the borough to raise awareness of dementia.

This evening, John Henderson, the quizmaster at the Elephant Inn pub in North Finchley is putting a ‘dementia’ round in his weekly quiz.

He said: “One of our pub quiz regulars told us about Dementia Awareness Week and asked if we could do something topical. We wanted to help raise awareness of this important issue so were very happy to oblige.”

On Sunday Anna Maton from Totteridge held a tea party for 20 people and raised £400 to fund research into Alzheimer’s.

Mrs Maton said: “The party was a great success, I really do believe that the taboo of dementia is starting to be broken down.”

As well as working with hospitals in Barnet to host information stands in Edgware Community Hospital throughout the week, members of the Alzheimer’s Society will speak to staff at Barnet Hospital about the needs of patients with dementia on Wednesday.

Dementia Support worker for the Alzheimer’s Society Remi Oke said: "This week has been fantastic. People are attending a variety of events, helping us to raise both awareness and valuable funds, as well as getting people chatting more openly about the subject.

"As the population ages, we all face the risk of one day developing dementia. This has been a chance for people to find out more, talk to us, and join a conversation that everyone’s talking about."
