A man who walked 12 miles dressed in a camel suit has raised more than £1,000 for good causes.

Pat O’Keeffe and 70 members of Fullerians Rugby Club in Watford walked 12 miles from their ground in the Cassiobury Estate to Allianz Park to raise money for a new club house and for the Peace Hospice in Watford.

Mr O’Keeffe, who walked wearing Saracens’ Sarrie the Camel mascot suit, said: “I’ve already had £1,200 in confirmed donations and am expecting another £200 to £300 to come in. I’m delighted I’ve raised more than £1,000.”

"It was a bit hot in the camel suit, but I knew what I was letting myself in for. It just made the beer I had when I got to Saracens all the better."

The walkers set off soon after 9am and stopped at the Peace Hospice in Peace Drive, The Three Crowns in Bushey and Harrow Rugby Club, making it to the ground in time for Saracens’ final premiership match of the season against Bath.

Mr O’Keeffe added: “It was a fantastic day, we had lots of fun, especially with the lovely weather we had. The Saracens game was great, a really good match day experience.”

Mr O'Keefe thanked all the volunteers who helped make the walk a success, including marshalls Jim and Jenny Kavanagh, first aider Jeff Wall and Clyve Hancock who helped organise the walk.

He also thanked the Fullerians Under-13 squad, who raised £511 for the Peace Hospice while they were on tour in Wales.

Mr O'Keeffe said: “This is the fourth walk I’ve done to raise money for the Peace Hospice. The hospice does wonderful work and I’m already contemplating next year's walk.”
