An adult education college has announced plans to run some of its courses from a secondary school in East Finchley.

Part of the art block and classrooms at Bishop Douglass School in Hamilton Road will be used for The Institute’s daytime and evening classes from September this year.

The deal puts an end to months of uncertainty for The Institute following the sale of its current premises at the Arts Centre in Beaumont Close to the Archer Academy free school, which will open in September.

Greville Waterman, chairman of The Institute said: “While The Institute has reconfirmed its agreement with the Archer Academy that we are retaining full access to the specialist art rooms on the ground floor of the Arts Centre for pottery, sculpture and some craft classes for the entire 2013/14 academic year, we obviously need more space elsewhere for our other classes, both daytime and evening.

“I am absolutely thrilled to be able to ensure the survival of The Institute through this partnership with a successful school like Bishop Douglass which is situated so close to our current home and totally shares our ethos and objectives.”

The Institute and Bishop Douglass have also agreed to construct a new building on the school site which will become The Institute’s permanent home.

Angela Murphy, headteacher of Bishop Douglass said: “As a highly respected college of adult education The Institute will complement and enhance Bishop Douglass’s vision of providing education for the entire community of learners on its site. We look forward to the opportunities and challenges which this partnership will bring.”
