She has already trekked from Morden to Edgware in a day and now a woman plans to walk the rest of the Northern Line to raise money for a housing charity.
Elaine O’Neill, 26 was inspired to walk the length of the Northern Line after a period of unemployment meant she had to walk to save money.
“I was surprised at how much more of London I saw and wanted to walk the length of an underground line to see how all the separate parts of the city fitted together.”
“I picked the Northern Line because it’s long enough to be a challenge, but short enough to be easily achievable in a day."
Ms O’Neill, from Cricklewood, decided her efforts might as well be for a good cause and chose to raise money for the housing charity Shelter.
She initially planned to raise £100, but has already collected over £1,156.
“This amount wildly exceeded everything I predicted. The Bedroom Tax and housing benefit reforms are going to put people on the street, Shelter needs all the money it can get.”
It took Ms O’Neill 8 hours to walk the 36km from Morden to Edgware last Friday
She said: “I was fascinated at how Barnet changed from one are to the next, from the large houses in Golders Green, to the industrial developments of Colindale, to the suburbs in Edgware.
“Edgware isn’t the prettiest of stations but it seemed like a palace to me when I reached it.”
She is set to walk from High Barnet through Mill Hill East to Kennington tomorrow.
