Schoolchildren wowed judges with their Spanish singing skills to come first in this year’s Barnet Eurovision Song Contest.

The upper school choir from Garden Suburb Junior School in Childs Way, Hampstead Garden Suburb, were “thrilled” to win, beating seven other finalists on Wednesday evening.

Taking centre stage, each group took it in turns to perform a song in front of a panel of judges who scored their performances on musical ability, enjoyment and pronunciation.

Hoping to hit the right note on the night were Colindale Primary, The Orion, Mathilda Marks Kennedy, Broadfields and Blessed Dominic schools as well as Garden Suburb Juniors, whose Spanish song took them to the top of the leader board.

Julia Sanitt, parent-governor at the school, said: “The children were thrilled to be crowned winners and performed the song again in front of their school as well as the infant school the following day.

“The children proudly wore their gold medals to school throughout the day.”
