Brent Cross Shopping Centre has pledged to recycle 100 per cent of its waste in an attempt to be more environmentally friendly.

None of the centre’s waste will be sent to landfill and any waste that cannot be recycled in the normal way will be turned into fuel.

So far this year Brent Cross has stopped 164 tonnes of rubbish – the equivalent weight of 14 double decker buses – from being sent to landfill.

Brent Cross environmental co-ordinator Kathryn Barber said: “The waste is now collected, dried out and shredded before being turned into pellets which are used to create new energy.

“There are no financial benefits to us at all in sending waste to an energy-from-waste facility instead of landfill but it means we can play our part in reducing landfill in the UK.”

Last year the centre sent 850 tonnes to landfill.
