Nubian sculpture and classic styles were among the themes when hairdressing apprentices showcased their skills in a competition to mark National Apprenticeship Week.

Barnet and Southgate College hosted the competition for its apprentices, who had to create a hair design from an iconic era in fashion such as punk, 1940s glamour and the swinging sixties.

Jordan Brumant, 19, who has been an apprentice at the college for six months said: “I chose the theme of The Year 2000 and Beyond and my inspiration was a Nubian sculpture.

“I wanted to create a hair design that was really strong and bang on trend so I incorporated neon jewellery, leopard print and lace into the outfit as well.”

Speaking about the benefits of an apprenticeship, Jordan said: “I’ve been working part-time and on Saturdays in hairdressing salons since I was 13 so when the opportunity came to do an apprenticeship I jumped at it as I knew I needed the qualifications.

“I work in a salon in Watford most of the week and I come into Barnet and Southgate College one day a week, so I’m getting real on the job training and being paid while I learn.”

Two students were chosen to qualify to go through to a national final on April 17. The overall winner will be flown to Madrid to take part in an international competition.
