A peaceful protest against the rape and murder of a young woman in India will be held in Barnet this week.
The Hindu Cultural Society of Friern Barnet and its supporters will give their backing to worldwide demonstrations surrounding the 23-year-old’s death in Delhi on December 16.
The group is holding an open meeting at its headquarters on Friday including talks, prayers and discussions on the issue.
Society president Prem Modgil said: “We’re not just demonstrating against this rape but the underlying problems of a lack of action from the government judiciary and corruption and bribery in the country.
“We feel sad and embarrassed that this is happening in the country of our roots – it is a disgrace.”
Supporters will be invited to sign a petition, calling for stronger justice in India, which will be sent to the Indian High Commission in London.
Mr Modgil is expecting up to 150 supporters to join the gathering, which will include a short prayer and talks from figures in the Indian community.
The meeting will take place at the HCS Bhavan, Colney Hatch Lane, Friern Barnet, on Friday between 8pm and 9pm.
Supporters are invited to bring a candle. For more information telephone the HCS on 0208 361 4484.
