Barnet Council should be applauded for getting into the Christmas spirit early and announcing that festive lights will be installed across town centres.
In previous years, the shambolic arguing over which areas would and would not get lights has spoilt what should be one of the most peaceful periods of the year.
As the lights are put up around Barnet let us hope that areas where traders have been unable to afford large contributions are not simply left with the bare minimum of a few strings of twinkling lights. Hopefully the council's quick decision means both shoppers and traders alike can now look forward to a bright and colourful Christmas.
