Traditional sculpting comes together with modern style in a new exhibition of Philip Jackson’s work.

His notable commissions includes The Equestrian sculpture of the Queen, footballers Matt Busby and Alex Ferguson at Manchester’s Old Trafford stadium, the In Pensioner sculpture for the Royal Hospital at Chelsea, the Young Mozart, the Korean War Memorial and dozens more.

Philip says: “Creating a public work is like writing a book. You need to study your subjects thoroughly. You have to remember that you have three audiences to think about – the people commissioning the work, the viewing public today, and the viewing public of 300 years from now.”

Iain Barrett, director of the Catto Gallery, says: “Without doubt, Philip is the first name on the list when a major new public work is commissioned. He is hugely in-demand, and his work has never been better. So it’s a real honour to give people the chance to see his gallery pieces up close and take one home.”

In 2012 Philip completed the Bomber Command Memorial in Green Park, central London and then in 2015 completed a statue of Mahatma Gandhi. The commission in London’s Parliament Square marked the 100th anniversary of Gandhi’s return to India to start the campaign for independence.

Limited edition maquettes of both are available in Philip’s new show at the Catto Gallery, ten years since his debut in 2007. His ‘gallery works’ will make up the bulk of the exhibition.
