The Conservative group has confirmed it is taking no action against Councillor Brian Coleman despite his arrest in connection with an alleged assault last week.

Totteridge representative Councillor Coleman was detained by officers following an apparent altercation outside a coffee shop in North Finchley High Road on Thursday afternoon.

The 51-year-old was released on police bail and he is due to return to a north London police station at the end of October.

Barnet’s Tory party has made no official statement on the matter, but group leader Councillor Richard Cornelius confirmed this morning no action was being taken.

Councillor Cornelius has been unavailable for interview on the situation surrounding his ward colleague but emailed the Times Series this morning.

When asked for a comment on the situation, he said: “The position is…Cllr Coleman has not been charged by the police and is innocent until proven guilty.”
