CINEMA goers will be treated to 2p tickets tonight to celebrate the 75th anniversary of a picture house in Barnet.

The Odeon cinema, in Great North Road, is hosting two evening screenings of The 39 Steps to mark the building's opening on May 15, 1935.

Tickets are being sold for the film at the price they were available at the time. The 8pm show has sold out although there may still be some last minute tickets available for the 10pm screening.

Staff will be dressed in traditional red and white uniforms of the time, which have been provided by Barnet based Dreamtime Creations.

There will be live saxophone music in the bar area upstairs and a speech by Barnet historian Paul Baker about the history of the cinema.

Phil Pierce, cinema manager of Odeon Barnet, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be celebrating our 75th anniversary.

“It’s great to be selling tickets at the same price as they were when the film was originally screened in 1935.

“The celebrations are our way of thanking all our guests for their loyalty over the years and we’re looking forward to the next 75 years of cinema magic.”

The building, which was given Grade II listed status by English Heritage in 1989, was originally opened as a one screen cinema but now houses five screens which can hold a total audience of more than 1,200 people.
