PROTESTERS are urging people to contact Barnet’s cabinet members in a bid to save their library.

The council is considering plans to move Friern Barnet Library into the artsdepot, nearly two miles away but residents and its users are desperately fighting the proposal.

A petition has been signed by more than 2,000 people who argue its closure will affect the most vulnerable people in the area as well as detriment hundreds of children’s literacy levels.

Save Friern Barnet Library activist group is encouraging people to email or write to councillors, arguing reasons against the closure.

Tamar Andrusier, from Glenthorne Road said: “Everyone on every street corner and every school gate is talking about the library and are desperate to save it.

“But, perhaps the cabinet are not aware because they don’t live here – we want to make sure they know how we fell so please please everybody write to them.

“This is our last chance to show the council how valued our library is and ask them to save it.”

There will also be a chance for residents to send their email at the group’s Friern Barnet library party, in Friern Barnet Road on Saturday, from 2 – 4 pm.

There will be free refreshments, music and a competition for the best ‘save our library’ banner.

Children can also take part in a fancy dress competition, and dress-up as their favourite book character.

The plans will be considered by the council’s Cabinet on Tuesday July 26.
