CHIPPING Barnet MP Theresa Villiers has said the council's decision to hike up certain allowances is a matter for “local, not national, decision making”.
The Junior Transport Minister failed to join colleagues Matthew Offord, the Hendon MP, and Finchley and Golders Green representative Mike Freer in condemning the decision.
The two former senior council members both condemned their former political allies for increasing the cash paid to leader Lynne Hillan and cabinet members.
In a statement Ms Villiers told the Times Series: "This issue is for the Council to determine. As an MP, I have no say in decisions made by elected councillors on pay and allowances. “This is a matter for local, not national, decision-making."
Many members of the public have also been incensed by the decision to raise the allowances when many council workers face pay freezes and even redundancy as part of austerity measures.
