The Barnet Liberal Democrats have selected their candidate for the Hampstead Garden Suburb council by-election.
Financial consultant Altan Akbiyik, 47, of Brunner Close, Hampstead Garden Suburb, will contest the seat on May 7, having previously stood for the party in the same ward during last year's local elections.
Mr Akbiyik aims to campaign on improving public services, with a focus on primary schools and improving road safety by introducing 20 mph zones and fixing roads and pavements.
He said: “I want to provide an alternative voice for the suburb on Barnet Council with a stronger focus on local issues. I want to replicate Jack Cohen's achievements in Childs Hill for the residents here.
“With the Tories on a majority of only one this is an excellent opportunity to change the dynamic of local decision making and stand up for a strong voice for the suburb.”
The by-election was triggered last month following the resignation of Conservative councillor Danny Seal, which has left the ruling Conservatives with no majority on Barnet Borough Council.
Other candidates for the seat include Rohit Grover for the Conservatives, Adele Ward for the Green Party and Janet Solomons for Labour.
