With 100 days to go until one of the most unpredictable general elections in years, the Times Series has put together an overview of the candidates standing in Barnet’s three constituencies on May 7.

Chipping Barnet

Covering the north east of the borough, this constituency has been represented by the Conservative Party since it was created in 1974. The seat covers the electoral wards of Brunswick Park, Coppetts, East Barnet, High Barnet, Oakleigh, Totteridge and Underhill.

The sitting MP is Conservative Northern Ireland Secretary Theresa Villiers, who achieved a majority of 11,927 at the 2010 election, and who will contest the seat again in this year’s General Election.

Other candidates who have thrown their hats in the ring include Amy Trevethan, an Underhill councillor who will contest the seat for Labour, Green Party campaigner AM Poppy and small businessman Victor Kaye for UKIP.

The Liberal Democrats are yet to announce their candidate.

Finchley and Golders Green

Seen as a bellwether seat, Finchley and Golders Green was created in 1997, when the old constituency of Finchley – represented by Margaret Thatcher from 1959 to 1992 - absorbed most of the old constituency of Hendon South, and lost some areas to Chipping Barnet.

It covers the wards of Childs Hill, East Finchley, Finchley Church End, Garden Suburb, Golders Green, West Finchley and Woodhouse.

Represented by Rudi Vis for Labour from 1997 to 2010, the seat was won by former Barnet Council leader Mike Freer for the Conservatives in the 2010 elections with a majority of 5,809.

Mr Freer will stand again in May, with other candidates to contest the seat including barrister Sarah Sackman for Labour, writer and publisher Adele Ward for the Green Party and project manager Richard King for UKIP.

The Liberal Democrats are yet to announce their candidate for this seat.

Hendon

One of the most marginal seats in the country, Hendon is currently represented by Conservative MP Matthew Offord, who won with a majority of 106 in the 2010 election. It was previously represented by Andrew Dismore for Labour from 1997 to 2010.

The seat was created in 1997, and covers the wards of Burnt Oak, Colindale, Edgware, Hale, Hendon, Mill Hill and West Hendon.

Former Barnet Council deputy leader Matthew Offord is set to contest the seat in May against London Assembly Member for Barnet and Camden Andrew Dismore, who will stand for Labour, horticulturalist and activist Ben Samuel for the Green Party, and Jeremy Zeid for UKIP, who is also the branch chairman for Harrow UKIP.

The Liberal Democrats are yet to announce their candidate for this seat.
